Sunday Scaries vol 10: Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

Lions, tigers, and CGI-otes… oh my!

egregious Cgi usage in the year of our lord 2026? but don’t let it taint your opinion of this otherwise awesome movie!!!

Wow. This film is an utter tour de force of horror cinema.

Single genre? Never heard of her. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy somehow manages to combine a crime thriller with possession, found footage, body horror, and some good ol’ fashioned Mummy tropes to create one hell of a ride.

Not only does this film blend so many different sub-genres within horror… it does each incredibly well. Each element is masterfully woven into the broader plot, so much so that I can only think to compare this movie to a symphony. This is an elaborate composition that has something every horror fan can enjoy. Truly breathtaking.

Perhaps the only real flaw of this movie (besides the CGI coyotes) is that it did not need to be 2 hours and 15 minutes long. This is an epic tale, but it meandered a bit too much in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, the story of Katie’s disappearance and the familial grief that ensued were powerful… but it took way too long to reach the horror elements.

This is a dense narrative with just a tad too much exposition for my taste. That said, I do really admire how Cronin was able to weave together such an elaborate story. In spite of the numerous intricate layers to this plot, Cronin manages to payoff every bit of foreshadowing and seemingly benign conversation in some meaningful way. Even the frog vs rat debate – I promise you are not ready for how that one pays off…

So if you can stay engaged for the somewhat excruciating slow build, then the conclusion is absolutely worth it. The writing is spectacular. The special effects will make your stomach churn. There’s hilarious (clearly James Wan-inspired) comic relief. Not to mention some truly stellar performances, especially from the child actors who totally blew me away with their range and expressiveness.

Alas, my TikTok addled brain just isn’t built for dense movies such as this. It was all genuinely good, but I think it could’ve been a lot tighter… we didn’t need all of that build up to understand the story and relationships among the characters. You know it’s a problem when all the people in your row pull out their phones to check the time at least once during the first half…

…and with that, I must give this an A (though it is an S in my heart).
