Triangle 2009 Horror Movie Poster

A Sunday Scaries post actually posted on a Sunday?

Please hold your applause.

This is one serious headfuck of a movie and I’m hesitant to go into too much detail because it’s best experienced raw. The only context you need is that Jess is a single mom with an autistic son who’s just trying to get out of the house for the day!! I’ll leave the rest to your viewing pleasure.

While I wouldn’t call it perfect and there are definitely tons of plot holes, Triangle is a pretty wild ride. Perhaps I was too dense (and a little too drunk) on my first watch, but this is the kind of movie you could rewatch a dozen times… and you might have to to chart out the various different twists and turns to try to piece together the broader framework.

In some aspects, I found this movie to be very clever although in others it felt a bit sloppy. Two in particular that I wasn’t a fan of:

  1. The surface-level “deepness”: they really bash you over the head (pun somewhat intended) with the allegorical comparison they’re trying to make. For something that’s trying to be this mysterious, I think they could have planted this seed a little less obviously
  2. The pacing: Jess jumps to some pretty obscene conclusions with seemingly no build up or rationale behind them. Even with the surprise reveal at the end, I don’t think the film does enough to make her motivation convincing.

That said, I did really enjoy the overall narrative structure of this film, which is very intentionally… triangular (gasp). You could make an argument that everything in this film is a triangle… the plot, the characters, the boats(!!!). Perhaps on subsequent watches I will have a more deep take on Jess’ triangularity in particular, but for now I’m not totally sold.

But that’s all I can say without spoiling too much.

enough rambling, time for rating
